River of Wells

Project type

Public Art & Public Space

Date

2015-16

The project was a commission for the City of London Corporation to develop a permanent public space that could address the short, medium and long-term needs of this key pedestrian walkway along the river Thames. The “River of Wells” was conceived as an interactive and arts-based urban intervention which positively connects people to the hidden natural and historic aspects of the site. It aimed to provide a strong sense of identity to a forgotten space as part of the wider Riverside Walk Enhancement Scheme.

This unexpected, playful installation is inspired by the colorful folklore of the hidden River Fleet, known as the “River of Wells” and associated with healing properties. The existing landscaping appears to transform into “well-like” structures, filled with a glistening surface. These encased panels of mirror-polished steel reflect light from spotlights onto the underside of the bridge. The pattern of the modules aims to reflect light like water. The control of the lighting was developed so the brightness would change with the ebb and flow of the river’s tide. The design carefully balances the intent with the practical requirements of public realm design, such as ongoing maintenance, budget and durability.
