Black Mountain Sanctuary
Project type
Public Art & Installation
Date
2013
Inspired by the mystical, mesmerising setting of the dramatic Black Mountains in Wales, a new site-specific interactive installation was created evoking the concept of strata and shifting tectonic layers, whilst making creative re-use of waste materials.
The Black Mountain Sanctuary was a sculptural timber pavilion woven with intriguing bands of material, which enticed the public to pull, twist and twang these appealingly tactile elements. The bands started as a neat geometrical pattern, following the lines of the timber structure to form the image of a mountain. The installation continuously transformed over the course of the festival as people interacted with the bands, which were created by re-using old bicycle inner tubes. At night, the installation transformed into a luminous cave, providing an intimate spaces for gathering.
