A DRAMATIC LANDSCAPE INTERVENTION AND PUBLIC VIEWING POINT TO CAPTURE THE PANORAMAS OF LOCH LOMOND AND CELEBRATE ITS RICH CULTURAL HERITAGE
We developed a concept proposal responding to a brief of creating an innovative and striking intervention, appropriate to the high quality of natural landscape and which can be constructed within a compressed time-frame.
Inveruglas Tower is a site-specific installation inspired by the dramatic splendor and rich cultural heritage of Loch Lomond. A mysterious apparition emerges from the rocks, evoking the myth and folklore of the myriad islands, creating an intriguing new landmark to be explored at the exposed rocks at Inveruglas. Reaching out and symbolically revealing the concealed castle ruins sited at Inveruglas Island, the proposal references the iconic architectural emblem of the dramatically placed Scottish castle
Creating a new punctuation in the landscape, the installation provides the opportunity to convey the national identity as a modern nation which is also steeped in history and heritage. The new timber elements form different types of spaces from which the Loch can be viewed and create a sequence of unfolding scenes. The full panoramic vista is revealed after a journey of concealment and surprise, intimate moments of reflection and pause, heightening the experience of the setting by presenting glimpses before reaching out to the epic vista of the Loch.
